Cavalier tops South Border in North Dakota 9-man quarterfinals

CAVALIER, N.D. – After taking a helmet to his left knee in a late regular-season game, Cavalier’s Brock Robbins is still running with a little pain.

“I’m about 95 percent,” Robbins said. “It’s not too bad now, until after a game. Then I have to ice it.”

On Saturday, Robbins put the hurt to South Border.

The junior running back scored two touchdowns in a 62-second span in the first quarter. That put the Tornadoes up 16-0 and they never looked back, handing South Border a 52-6 defeat in the quarterfinals of the North Dakota 9-man high school football playoffs.

“When you have the adrenaline going, you don’t think about the pain,” said Robbins, who had a game-high 118 rushing yards, all in the first half. “You just want to get into the end zone.”

Robbins put Cavalier on the scoreboard on its initial possession. He capped an eight-play, 61-yard drive when he went up the middle, broke a tackle at the

15-yard line, and scored on a 27-yard run.

Cavalier got the ball right back when Trent Karel recovered a fumble two plays into the Mustangs’ next possession. It took two plays for the Tornadoes to score, with Robbins exploding up the middle and going 62 yards untouched for a

16-0 lead with 4:57 left in the first quarter.

“Brock isn’t 100 percent, but he’s a tough kid,” Cavalier coach Sandy Laxdal said. “He’s battled through (the injury). He’s a tough kid; he usually isn’t brought down one-on-one.

“We figured they would concentrate on (Cavalier quarterback Ryan) Chrest. We knew our backs would be a big key. Brock had a huge game. And our line did an outstanding job.”

Cavalier built a 46-0 halftime lead. Chrest and Chase Walton had rushing touchdowns of 35 and 12 yards, respectively. Even the defense got into the scoring act. Cody Walton intercepted a screen pass and returned it 85 yards for a score, and Blake Kaercher had an 18-yard return of a fumble recovery for a TD.
