Letter: Moorhead will be very well served with Mike Hulett in mayor’s seatOne of the best things to emerge in Moorhead’s election discussion so far is the conversation about regenerating Moorhead’s former downtown area. As a Moorhead resident and as a guy with the nickname “Downtown Dave,” I’ve stayed close to these discussions and have been impressed with the passion that many in Moorhead have for the overall idea. Combining that energy with other good ideas about embracing our college-age residents is a promising start to a long overdue concentration of effort.
These young residents represent Moorhead’s future, and we should do all we can to make their years in the community so rewarding that they’ll never want to leave!
Mike Hulett has offered a vision for downtown, appropriately called “Return to Center,” recalling Moorhead’s earlier, more prosperous times when Center Avenue was Moorhead’s center of commerce and activity. He has clearly outlined steps and incentives to make a beginning in what can be a very transformative effort that will elevate Moorhead’s overall quality of life.
I’ve been impressed with his understanding of the need to build on our strengths, to encourage the expansion of businesses already in place, to animate the streets with cultural events and entertainment, and to create a bright new sense of place and vitality. He knows that such an effort is an ongoing effort that requires focus and stick-to-it-tiveness and is truly never finished. He’ll keep his eye on the bull’s-eye.
Hulett is, and has been, an involved and engaged citizen and leader. I’ve known him to be a pragmatic, curious and collaborative problem-solver who listens and learns as he leads. Moorhead will benefit tremendously from his leadership and vision.
