Concordia to investigate structural issues with Memorial Auditorium
The school recently identified issues with the auditorium’s roof and snow load capacity that it feels need further investigation.
Built in 1952, Memorial Auditorium is home to basketball, wrestling and volleyball teams and several regional high school basketball tournaments. The athletic department and the offices for several coaches are also in Memorial Auditorium.
The announcement stated that the building and its occupants, who were notified Friday via email, are safe.
The school has hired an engineering firm to conduct a structural analysis over the next several months to pinpoint issues.
The building will be closed for up to a week during November.
While the analysis is being conducted, Concordia officials will try to alleviate load pressure on the roof. “It may become necessary to close the building for periods of time,” the announcement stated.
A long-term solution will be developed after the analysis is complete.
Concordia spokesman Roger Degerman would not discuss Memorial Auditorium beyond what is provided in the statement. He said all available information has been provided to the campus community.
More information about contingency plans for office use, classes and events in Memorial Auditorium will be shared as it becomes available, he said.
