15-year employee retires from Post Office

Norval Lee has retired from the Moorhead Post Office after 15 years of service.

He began his postal career as a rural carrier sub in Georgetown, Minn. He transferred to the Moorhead Post Office in 1996 and carried RR2 in south Moorhead.

Small business center to host two-day training

The West Central Minnesota Small Business Development Center at the Offutt School of Business at Concordia College will host “Profit Mystery to Profit Mastery” training from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 6 -7.

This two-day training is designed to provide small business owners, accountants, bankers, key managers, entrepreneurs and business advisers with the tools to understand financial management and increase their chances of success in today’s difficult economic times.

The course also qualifies for 16 hours of continuing professional education credits for certified public accountants.

Business Growth Summit slated in Fargo

A Business Growth Summit will be held Nov. 20 at the Microsoft Executive Briefing Center on the Microsoft campus in Fargo.

The event, organized by the Dakota Manufacturing Extension Partnership, will focus on helping existing companies with their commitment to innovation.

The one-day conference will feature Robert B. Tucker, president and founder of The Innovation Resource, who has published numerous books on innovation, has appeared on ABC, NBC, PBS and was a featured guest on the CNBC series “The Business of Innovation.”

A panel discussion during the conference will feature best practices from leaders of area companies including Spectrum Aeromed, John Deere Electronic Solutions, Energy and Environmental Research Center, Intelligent InSites and WCCO Belting.

Balance Your Books moves offices

Balance Your Books has moved its Detroit Lakes, Minn., offices to the Graystone Complex in Detroit Lakes.

The business is owned by Christine Gray and offers accounting and QuickBooks guidance services. The business was previously located in the M-State Business and Entrepreneurial Center in Detroit Lakes.

Gray is a graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration. She has 19 years of accounting experience using QuickBooks software.

Retirement open house set Oct. 26 for Richard

An open house to honor Gerald Richard on his retirement will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Senior Center, Horace, N.D.

Richard is retiring after 44 years in the plumbing business and owner of Metro Plumbing for the past 29 years.

Grande retires from sheriff’s office

Cpl. Mike Grande has retired from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

He began his career with the office in 1986 as a correctional officer at the Cass County Jail. He served for many years as a patrol deputy before he became the training officer in 1995 in the support services division. He was promoted to corporal in 2010.

He retired as the administrative corporal in the field services division.

Deli raising funds for Colorado flood victims

Smiling Moose Deli is hosting a “Cookies for Colorado” fundraiser through October to help victims of recent flooding in Boulder and Broomfield counties in Colorado.

The Smiling Moose Deli franchise is based in Colorado. Nathan Everson is owner of the two Smiling Moose Delis in Fargo.

For every cookie sold through October, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Community Food Share in Colorado, which is helping ensure a sustainable source of food for displaced community members and those impacted economically by the floods.

Free panel discussion to look at co-op careers

Students and interested community members can learn about cooperatives and career opportunities during a free panel discussion at 11 a.m. Friday in Room 126 of Barry Hall in downtown Fargo. Free pizza and pop will be served following the session.

Speakers will represent different segments of the cooperative business model including: Eric Carlson, a relationship manager with CoBank in Fargo; Jasper Schneider, North Dakota’s state director for USDA Rural Development; Heidi Demars, outreach coordinator for the BisMan Community Food Co-op; and Cate Sprout, staffing manager for CHS, the nation’s largest cooperative.

Leadership expert to present training

David Mitchell of The Leadership Difference will share “The Power of Understanding People” during a presentation at 4 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Ramada Plaza and Suites, 1635 42nd St. S., Fargo.

His talk will be followed by a social with cash bar and hors d’oeuvres at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public and sponsored by Choice Financial Group, Fiebiger, Swanson, West & Co., and Hirshfield’s Paints.

Luncheon to focus on ‘Servant Leadership’

“The Power of Servant Leadership” will be the topic of North Dakota State University’s Executive Education luncheon session on Thursday.

The presenter will be James C. Hunter, author of the best-selling books “The Servant: A Simple Story about the True Essence of Leadership” and “The World’s Most Powerful Leadership Principle: How to Become a Servant Leader.”

The books are used in many master’s of business administration programs and other higher education curricula.
