Force fall at home to Cedar Rapids

FARGO – The Fargo Force’s third home game of the season started out rough for starting goalie Cam Johnson and the Force defense, and it would only get worse before the end of the night.

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defeated the Force 7-1 on Thursday.

“It wasn’t (Johnson’s) fault,” said Force head coach John Marks about the loss. “If it wasn’t for Cam, it would have been 15-1.”

Cedar Rapids managed to get 16 shots on goal in the first period, outshooting the Force by 12. RoughRiders’ Jason Kalinowski’s centering pass to Jack Rowe gave the team a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period. Alex Toscano’s late elbowing penalty gave the Riders a man-advantage at the start of the second period.

Clark Kuster, assisted by Ivan Provorov, used the extra attacker to score a power-play goal 44 seconds into the second period. The Force’s offense picked up momentum with nine additional shots on goal, but couldn’t get anything past RoughRiders goalie Danny Tirone.

Force defenseman Butrus Ghafari would receive a total of 17 minutes for fighting, game misconduct, and instigating after dropping Jason Kalinowski to the ice immediately after a face off.

The Force’s struggle to defend their side of the ice contributed to five RoughRiders goals in the third period, all scored by different players. Shots on goal for the night wound end 41-20 in favor of the Riders.

“Third period we gave up five goals because there was no defense,” Marks said. “Defense got beat one-on-one, and there were too many turnovers and no physical play.”

John Baiocco scored the only Force goal of the night.
