Century tops Bismarck for boys soccer title

BISMARCK – It has been a long time since anybody has scored a goal on the Bismarck Century boys soccer team.

Bismarck never could figure out how to get it done.

The Demons finished atop the West Region standings, had the best record in the state and one of its best offenses.

But for the third straight time this season Century shut out the Demons, posting a 1-0 shootout victory in Saturday’s boys soccer state tournament final at Shiloh Christian’s Miller Field.

And for the third straight year, the Patriots are champions.

It was Century’s fourth title since 2007, with three of the final victories against Bismarck.

“I’m really good friends with a lot of guys on that team, but at the same, there’s nothing better than beating Bismarck in your hometown in the championship,” Century senior defender Matt MacArthur said.

The teams got to play in front of their hometown fans due to a last-minute switch in venues. Jamestown’s Rotary Field was in unplayable condition due to all the rain in the previous 24 hours, so the championship match was moved to Bismarck. The third-place and fifth-place matches were canceled.

The result was a match that was short on chances but long on drama, especially in the shootout.

A pair of all-state seniors traded goals in the first round. Bismarck’s Cole Olson – who was named the state senior athlete of the year – gave Bismarck the lead, but MacArthur evened it up.

Then it was time for a sophomore to grab the spotlight. Century goalkeeper Zach Sweep made consecutive diving saves on Willi Ulness and Cody Evanson to put the Patriots in charge.

Both balls were well struck, ticketed for the lower corners of the net. But Sweep went to his right to stop Ulness and his left to deny Evanson.

“Nothing really goes through your mind – just not to go early and react to where they’re going and make the save,” Sweep said. “It felt great to make them. I don’t know how to describe it.”
