Bismarck Century tops Fargo Davies at ND boys soccer state tournament

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Bismarck Century’s defense continues to stifle.

The Patriots shut out their fifth consecutive opponent, blanking Fargo Davies 1-0 in the opening round of the North Dakota boys state soccer tournament Thursday at Rotary Field.

It’s the seventh shutout in the past eight games for second-seeded Century, which meets Minot in today’s 7 p.m. semifinals.

Senior Matt MacArthur and juniors Cody DeWitt and Anthony Morrell started on defense in front of goaltender Zach Sweep and made sure he didn’t have to do much work. Even when Davies applied extra pressure in the final five minutes, the Eagles never got a clean shot at Sweep.

“They’re just great players overall,” Sweep said of his defenders. “They could be playing anywhere on the field, but we need a good defense we can play through up top.”

The lone goal of the game came in the first half.

Century senior Julian Wilhelm won a race to the ball and ran for nearly 20 yards with a defender at his side until he sidestepped him and shot past Davies keeper Dillon Boe with just less than 10 minutes before halftime.

“It was a little different than I thought it would be,” Sweep said of the match. “But we came out with a win. That’s all that matters.”

Davies spent plenty of time in Century’s end in the second half, but getting actual shots on goal proved difficult. The Patriots (11-2-4) flexed their muscles in the first half, controlling time of possession.

“We knew they were going to come out and possess the ball,” said Fargo Davies coach Nick Christianson, whose team meets Fargo Shanley in consolation play at 3 p.m. today “We just had the one break on the defensive side of the ball and that’s how they scored their goal. Those things happen, but I thought we played well in the second half and limited their chances.”

FIRST HALF: 1, BC, Wilhelm (unassisted), 30:45.

SECOND HALF: No scoring.

SAVES: FD, Boe 6-1–7. BC, Sweep 2-1–3.
