Letter: Get ready to ‘Fill the Dome’On Halloween, student council members from your local school district will be coming around “trick or canning” for nonperishable food items for the Fill the Dome food drive. Fill the Dome is a youth-led food drive held on Nov. 25 and 26, incorporating Fargo-Moorhead area schools from elementary schools to high schools. More than 50 area schools were a part of the Fill the Dome in 2012, and the food drive brought in more than 167,000 pounds.
I have been part of the experience for several years, and it amazes me to see how much students in the community can help. When I look at the dome floor filling up with nonperishable food items from all of these different schools, it is eye-opening how much we, as students, can help others.
Fill the Dome started in October 2007 by a group of high school students wanting to make a difference in their community; it has been an annual event ever since. Fill the Dome is now led by representatives from each high school. Endless hours of planning go into this bountiful food drive. The goal is to get the whole Fargo Dome floor covered in non-perishable food items for local pantries. The dome floor is about 80,000 square feet, and this year, the community will try again.
Another way to donate is at Hornbacher’s grocery stores where there are booths set up for you to donate a pre-made donation bag right there. People can also donate online at www.impactgiveback.org. Look for impact Fill the Dome.
Please help our area youth collect for the local food pantries.
