Cobbers upset No. 3 St. Thomas in volleyballST. PAUL – The Concordia volleyball team knocked off the No. 3-ranked team in NCAA Division III, putting an end to a number of St. Thomas streaks in the process.
Kayla Hampton had a team-high 15 kills as the Cobbers defeated the Tommies 25-23, 25-18, 16-25, 12-25, 15-13 on Wednesday.
“They’re obviously one of the best teams in the country,” Cobbers coach Tim Mosser said of the Tommies. “They’re so consistent. It’s hard to get runs on a team like St. Thomas.”
The Tommies (18-2, 5-1 MIAC) fell from first to third in the conference standings.
The loss snaps their 34-match home winning streak, their 20-match win streak against MIAC opponents and their 18-match regular-season win streak.
The Cobbers (15-7, 6-0) and Augsburg are tied for the MIAC lead.
“We’ve always wanted to be in control of our own destiny,” Mosser said. “Realistically, the MIAC championship can be ours.”
St. Thomas’ Kelly Foley, who is the reigning MIAC Player of the Year, led all players with 19 kills. But Mosser credited Hampton and her teammates for their ability to respond.
“She was on fire,” Mosser said of Hampton. “She was playing against probably one of the best middle hitters in the country (in Foley).”
The Cobbers play a nonconference match against Mayville State on Monday. They return to MIAC play on Oct. 18 at home against Gustavus Adolphus.
