Shanley hangs for 2A East Region football win over Wahpeton

FARGO – A bitter wind from the north and rain severely cut into the offensive creativity both Wahpeton and Fargo Shanley like to employ on most Friday nights.

Both had to play with what Mother Nature dealt them.

The Deacons had just enough to edge the Huskies 13-0 during a North Dakota Class 2A, East Region football game on Friday at Sid Cichy Stadium.

Third-ranked Shanley (5-1, 4-0 East) got a rushing touchdown apiece from junior Alex Berg and senior Peter Simon to earn the victory.

“We knew we would have trouble throwing the ball with the weather,” Shanley head coach Rod Oksendahl said. “It’s tough when the weather has to put a damper on a game like this, but we’ll take the win.”

Both Shanley and No. 4-ranked Wahpeton feature two of the state’s best passing attacks, but that was neutralized. Instead it became a battle for field position.

Shanley’s first touchdown was set up by a big play from its defense. Junior defensive back Alex Conner intercepted a pass from Wahpeton senior quarterback Jack Christensen on a third-and-10 from the Huskies’ 25-yard line.

Conner returned the pick to the Huskies’ 6 and four plays later Berg rushed for a 1-yard touchdown with 7:16 left in the first half.

“For being as big of a game as it was, I don’t think we came in with much intensity,” Wahpeton head coach Brian Dokken said. “Shanley is a great team, and we just were not able to overcome some of our early mistakes.”

Despite several costly penalties, the Huskies (5-1, 3-1) stayed in the game and entered Shanley territory with less than 10 minutes left.

Facing a fourth-and-1 on Shanley’s 46-yard line, the Huskies opted to go for it, but were called for a false start, backing them up five yards and forcing them to punt.

Shanley took over and rattled off a 13-play, 80-yard drive, which Simon capped off with a 25-yard touchdown run.

“We kept running the same play,” said Simon, whose touchdown came with 2:26 left to play. “We went back to our bread and butter and put it to them. Our line did a great job on that drive and has really been playing well of late. It doesn’t happen without those guys.”

The drive consumed over seven minutes. Simon finished with 57 yards on 10 carries. Junior Danny Stasch rushed for 83 yards on 20 carries for the Deacons.

Christensen finished 3 of 11 passing for 95 yards to lead the Huskies.
