Letter: Have no voice in tax mattersA letter by Scott Richardson left me wondering. He complains about people who build cabins (non-homesteaded homes) on our beautiful lakes. I wonder if he realizes that although we pay taxes on those homes, we do not get voting privileges in the township that those are located in unless the home is our primary residence. Many of the cabin owners vote in other cities or states.
Yes, we pay taxes, but although we rely on some services in the summer months, we rarely call the police or fire departments. We don’t send our children to the local schools. We do contribute to the economy of the local retailers.
When I had children in school, I was happy that the older citizens contributed to my children’s education. I am happy to contribute to your children’s education. Please remember that if your school district needs money you have to go to the local voters to accomplish that, not to the summer residents that have no voice.
