Cherries for Charity makes record donation

FARGO – Hornbacher’s stores’ annual Cherries for Charity event raised a record amount here for the YWCA Cass Clay and Rape and Abuse Crisis Center.

The grocery store chain donated $50,000, which will be donated evenly between the two organizations, according to a news release. The money was presented in a Friday ceremony.

Hornbacher’s sold more than 97,660 pounds of cherries during its one week campaign July 10-16.

The Cherries for Charity was started by the F-M Cosmopolitan Club in 1982 before partnering two years later with Hornbacher’s.

Over the years, the charity drive has raised more than $339,000 by selling more than 1.2 million pounds of cherries.

The donation amount per pound was doubled this year to 50 cents, according to the news release from the F-M Cosmopolitan Club.
