Weather Talk: Coolest temp of fall so far a 40-degree low on Sept. 21

Although other locations in the area have recorded at least one morning with a low in the 30s, the coolest temperature so far this autumn in Fargo-Moorhead was a 40-degree low on Sept. 21.

Since records began in 1881, there have been only three other years with the first low temperature below 40 degrees occurring later than today. In 2005, the first low below 40 was on Sept. 26. In 1977, it was recorded on Sept. 29. The record for the latest first temperature below 40 degrees occurred in 1905, when the first low in the 30s did not happen until Oct. 9.

Sept. 29 is coming up this Sunday, and although it is possible we may record a low in the 30s this weekend, the odds seem to favor this year besting that date, placing this year into at least second place for latest first sub-40-degree low on record.
