Davies’ Jennifer Marsh takes medalist honors at ND East Region girls golf meet

GRAND FORKS – After taking medalist honors in the final three regular-season meets of the season, Kathleen Marsh shot an uncharacteristic 10 on the par-4 14th hole Monday.

That took her out of the running for another individual title. But Marsh’s disappointment went beyond her own score.

“That was very embarrassing,” the Fargo Davies senior said of her struggles on No. 14. “And I wasn’t sure how everybody else was doing. I was nervous about if our team would win.”

The Eagles did pick up the slack for their season-long leader.

Davies, led by medalist Jennifer Marsh – Kathleen’s younger sister – shot a 353 to win the North Dakota East Region girls meet under extremely windy conditions at Grand Forks Country Club. The Eagles finished nine strokes ahead of both Wahpeton and defending champion Fargo North.

Other teams qualifying for next week’s Class A state meet in Grand Forks were Fargo Shanley (366), Grand Forks Red River (372), West Fargo (389) and Grand Forks Central (392).

Jennifer Marsh finished with a 76 to pick up her second individual win of the season. She was followed by Wahpeton’s Savonnah Haselhorst (79) and Kathleen Marsh (84).

The Marsh sisters were the top two finishers in individual averages in the Eastern Dakota Conference this season. No other Davies girls golfer was in the top 15.

“We haven’t had the balance we’ve had the last few years,” Davies coach Heather Yarber said. “Fargo North has a number of girls who can shoot around 90. We don’t have that.

“I knew we had other girls who were doing better than normal on the back nine today. So I thought we had a shot (at winning).”

Davies also got a 95 from Anna Davison and a 98 from Lexa Brossart to round out its top four. “Those are good scores on a windy day like this,” Yarber said.

A big key for the Eagles was Jennifer Marsh matching her EDC season average of 76.6. The sophomore had an eagle on the par-4 No. 10 and four birdies.

As for beating her older sister, “I felt bad for her. She did well on all the other holes,” Jennifer Marsh said. But, to beat her, she added, “it feels good.”

Kathleen Marsh was named the East Region senior player of the year. Her 75.6 regular-season average led the EDC. East Region coach of the year honors went to West Fargo’s Dan Wolf.
