Weather Talk: Odd as it sounds, summer precip was near averageIt might sound strange, even unbelievable. Nevertheless, Fargo-Moorhead recorded near average precipitation for the summer.
However, we did not get there by getting average rainfall through the summer. We got there by getting very heavy rain in June and very little rain after that. June rainfall at the official gauge at Hector International Airport was 7.73 inches, which is 3.83 inches above average. In July, the rainfall was a mere 0.90 inches, which is 1.89 inches below average. August rain was a scant 0.39 inches, which is 2.17 inches below average.
But taken as a whole, rainfall for the summer months of June, July, and August was 9.02 inches, which is just 0.23 inches below average.
Years from now, someone casually scanning summer rain records will see that total and think it was an unspectacular summer. In fact, we spent June mopping up floods and by August we were trying to keep lawns alive.
