Judge dismisses data breach suit against Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — A federal judge has dismissed a series of lawsuits against the state of Minnesota by people who say their driver's license data was improperly accessed by a Department of Natural Resources employee.

U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen on Friday granted a motion by Minnesota General Lori Swanson's office to dismiss the cases. The Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/18gzK95 ) reports the dismissal spares the state from exposure to millions in potential damages.

The consolidated lawsuits targeted both the DNR and the state Department of Public Safety.

Ericksen said the state could not be held liable for the actions of former DNR enforcement officer John Hunt. Hunt was fired after officials said he inappropriately accessed the records of thousands of Minnesotans.

Hunt also was named as a defendant. He also faces criminal charges.
