Letter: Bison/UND game should start againThe North Dakota State University / University of North Dakota football debate has been brought up again. This time by the president of the Minnesota Twins, no less: (Forum commentary, Sept. 8).
The Bison/UND rivalry renewal question was put to NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor at a pregame interview (KFGO’s Tailgaters) on Sept. 7. He gave no real answer at all. He just talked of the “technicalities” to be worked out. Maybe by 2015 or 2016. Technicalities? Were there not technicalities to be worked out in getting Ferris State and Delaware State on the schedule? How long did it take to work those out? How much did NDSU have to pay for those teams to charter a plane and make hotel accommodations? How much would they have to pay UND to take a one-hour bus ride down the interstate?
UND just played South Dakota State. They worked out the technicalities.
The Sioux gave sixth-ranked SDSU a great game, losing 35-28. If Taylor and his staff can’t work out the technicalities, then they are either incompetent or just don’t want the game.
Taylor, NDSU President Dean Bresciani and even coach Craig Bohl talk a lot about tradition. They are not from this area and maybe they couldn’t care less about tradition. If they cared about tradition, the first thing they would have done when UND came up to Division I was to renew the great Bison/Sioux rivalry.
As Twins President Dave St. Peter (a UND alum) put it: “The bottom line is that all the arguments are trite and tired. UND and NDSU should be playing each other.”
I couldn’t agree more. Nor could both communities, student bodies and the state of North Dakota. Bresciani, Taylor and any others who make such decisions have some explaining to do. If there is a good reason the two teams should not play then let’s hear it. If not, work out the technicalities and schedule the game.
