West Fest shows how the West was fun

FARGO – The love keeps coming for West Fargo.

Being named City of the Year by the North Dakota League of Cities earlier this week was like an extra birthday present for the city, which celebrates its civic pride this weekend with the annual West Fest.

The festivities start rumbling from 5 to 9 tonight with the final West Fargo Cruise Night of the season. Grab a spot on Sheyenne Street between Seventh and Main avenues and watch the hot rods and classic roadsters roll on by. Or stroll up and down the stretch checking out the refinished interiors and finely tuned engines.

Friday is homecoming for West Fargo High School with the game against Grand Forks Central at 6 p.m. The festivities aren’t just limited to school grounds, however, as the West Fargo VFW, 308 Sheyenne St., kicks up its heels with Packer Jam, featuring Flashback playing at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday is jam-packed with events, starting with a huge rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Arena, 1201 7th Ave. E. If you need an eye-opener for your shopping, hit the Ministerial Society Pancake Feed from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 127 2nd Ave. E., West Fargo.

Burn off the big breakfast with a 10k run starting at 8 a.m., followed shortly by a 2-mile walk and 5k run starting at Main Avenue and Sheyenne Street.

There are plenty of sporting events, with the Mike McLeod Softball Tournament starting at 9 a.m. at Rendezvous Park, 1055 32nd Ave., and a horseshoe tournament at 9:30 a.m. in Elmwood Park, 600 13th Ave. W.

Penny & Pals offer family entertainment at 11 a.m. along Sheyenne Street, and a food court will be open at 10 a.m. along the street.

The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. at the corner of Second Ave. and Third Street East. Floats and marchers will proceed to Sheyenne Street then to 10th Avenue before ending at Second Street. Oversized units will be lined up at Sheyenne and Main.

Kids’ activities start rolling again post-parade with inflatable games, face-painting clowns, a magician and more from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Eastwood Elementary Playground, 500 10th Ave. E. A community band concerts starts at 3 p.m.

At the same time, Streets Alive will turn some of the roads in that neighborhood over to bikers and skaters and other happenings.

West Fest comes to a close with the 74th Annual Firefighters Ball from 8 p.m. to midnight when Billy D and the Crystals rock the night away at Veterans Memorial Arena, 1201 7th Ave. E.
