Houston Chronicle names Star Tribune's Barnes as editor

HOUSTON — The Houston Chronicle has a new editor.

Nancy Barnes on Wednesday was named editor and executive vice president of news for the Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/14jiLBv ). The announcement on the newspaper's website says Barnes will be the first woman to serve as editor of the Houston Chronicle in its 112-year history.

Barnes, who's 52, begins her new job Oct. 14 after serving as editor and senior VP of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis since 2007. The Star Tribune won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting for stories on a spike in infant deaths at poorly regulated day care homes.

Barnes succeeds Jeff Cohen, who's moved to oversight of the Houston Chronicle editorial pages.
