Weather Talk: September ranks third in least-to-most cloudiness

In a ranking of the months from least cloudy to most cloudy, September comes in third.

On average, there is more cloudiness in June than in September. June, however, is usually a much warmer month than September. But June is also the rainiest month of the year, and it is not unusual for June weather to go cloudy several days in a row.

The fall months bring a steady increase in wind and a steady decrease in precipitation to accompany the seasonal increase in clouds.

The cloudiest months of the year, in order, are November, December and January.

Summertime is the peak for thunderstorms, but a few do happen every fall. Thunder is heard an average of three days in September, one day in October, and just one day every 10 years during November.
