Davies scores 50 first-half points to pull away from GF Central

GRAND FORKS – Fargo Davies was ready to take its football frustrations out on some team.

Grand Forks Central turned out to be that team. Davies spoiled the Knights’ homecoming game Friday night, scoring 50 first-half points en route to a 50-8 victory.

Central dropped to 0-3. Davies got its first win after dropping its first two games to state-ranked teams, losing by 39 points to Bismarck Century then, last week, losing by seven in overtime to Minot.

“We were frustrated, and that was probably a good thing,” Eagles coach Jason Thielges said. “After the Minot game, everyone was mad. I think we were the best 0-2 team in the state. We wanted to come out today and play well.”

Davies had eight first-half possessions. Seven resulted in touchdowns. The one Central stop came when the Eagles fumbled on GFC’s 8-yard line and Spencer Oen recovered the ball.

Davies set the tone early. It took the Eagles three plays to go 63 yards on their first drive, with Alek Groth scoring on a 41-yard run.

That was one of three quick scores in the half. Daylon Melby went 51 yards to score on a one-play drive and Davies went 80 yards on three plays on its final possession, with Jordan Hjelseth catching a 40-yard TD pass from Aidan Hartness.

“That first touchdown broke the ice,” Thielges said. “It was good to get off to a good start. We needed that confidence builder.”

Davies’ starting offense accumulated 468 yards in the first half, then gave way to reserves in the final two quarters. Melby rushed for 96 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Groth rushed for 95 yards. And Hartness passed for 202 yards and four TDs, two of them to Hjelseth.

“We knew we’d have trouble up front,” Central coach Bill Lorenz said. “They were bigger on the line, and they were more physical.”
