Limbaugh returning to AM 1100 The Flag

FARGO – Rush Limbaugh will return to the F-M radio dial just a week after the conservative talk radio king was dropped by a different local station.

Scott Hennen, the host of conservative morning program “What’s on Your Mind?” that airs on five stations across North Dakota, told The Forum on Friday that AM 1100 The Flag will announce Limbaugh’s return Monday morning.

It marks a swift end to Limbaugh’s absence in the area that started when 101.9 FM switched on Sunday from a conservative talk format Talk FM that it launched in March 2012, back to its focus on rock music as Rock 102.

Hennen said Limbaugh will be broadcast on The Flag from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, immediately following his own program that airs from 8 to 11 a.m.

Rock 102 had suffered from low ratings since it made the switch to talk radio, dropping in Arbitron ratings from a share of 4.1 in fall 2011 to 1.7 this spring.

Hennen said Limbaugh had always been a strong performer on The Flag before the FM station snatched him up for a little more than a year, and said the AM station expects to draw plenty of listeners by offering a local show that will lead into the nationally syndicated program.

“The secret to success in conservative talk radio is to put all the conservative shows in one spot,” he said.

Hennen said another key difference is that The Flag has a 50-kilowatt signal, much stronger than 101.9 FM, which means it will transmit farther and get Limbaugh into cars, homes and businesses across eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota.

He said The Flag signed a three-year contract to air Limbaugh in the F-M area “just so listeners don’t have to go through this again.”
