Weekend watch: Christopher Parkening and Gordon Lightfoot
Acoustic guitar fans can hear two different takes on the instrument this weekend. Studying at the hand of Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia, Christopher Parkening picked up a thing or two. For more than four decades, Parkening has been one of the most in-demand classical guitarists, playing with Placido Domingo, Renée Fleming, John Williams, Josh Groban and Kathleen Battle, among others.
Parkening discusses the art of the guitar and offers a master class at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Recital Hall, NDSU. The event is free and open to the public.
On Saturday night, folk troubadour Gordon Lightfoot returns to the Fargo Civic Center, 207 4th St. N., for another trip down memory lane. While he’s sure to play hits like “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” “Carefree Highway” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” here’s hoping the now 74-year-old singer’s voice is in better shape than when he played the Civic in 2009.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $36, $46 and $66. 800-745-3000.
