Letter: Start school after Labor Day

I keep reading all of the arguments to start school later due to the nice weather, and I agree wholeheartedly. However, we need to talk dollars and cents in order to get our point across. So, just how many tourism dollars are we losing out on by making our families return to school at the peak of the summer season?

Are we really promoting our state – “come work here,” “travel to ND” – by cutting into the really beautiful months of summer in North Dakota? How can we expect families to travel here in the height of the summer season when we don’t even allow our own to spend the month of August enjoying what North Dakota has to offer?

Seems to me we are our own worst enemy sometimes. Let’s walk the walk. Do we really want the tourism? Do we really want the dollars that tourism generates? Time for a change.

The time is now. Let’s get the petition signed and on the ballot. Vote to start school in the state of North Dakota after Labor Day. My vote is for our beautiful state and for the families who live and travel here.
