Letter: SPLC deserves support from NDIt is somewhat heartening to see North Dakota outrage expressed over a notorious white supremacist’s alarming progress at establishing a town of vicious hate among us. But will this outpouring translate into action for preventing future hate schemes?
Hand-wringing won’t help but supporting reputable human rights and humanitarian efforts will. The news about the hate criminal in Leith reminded me that it was time to sit down and write my annual check to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which was responsible for alerting the community to the menace in their town.
Of course, each of us needs to take additional hate-quelling actions beyond making strategic monetary contributions. But it’s critical to support the anti-hate work of highly regarded organizations like SPLC – and Sojourners-Faith in Action for Social Justice and the American Friends Service Committee (Quaker).
After all, if none of us had been contributing to the SPLC in past years, how much longer might it have been before we even became aware of the evil festering in Leith?
