Letter: School permits access to porn?

My daughter attends South High School in 11th grade. Today, they were all given tablet computers. Last year I contacted the school many times and even had a face-to-face meeting with the principal and the head tech guy about the computers they were given being able to connect to porn and gambling sites while at home.

Well, this year it does again. At the least I asked them to notify parents that their child’s computer may not connect to the filter while at home. What they did was put a paragraph on the newsletter at the end of school stressing how important it is to watch your child while online.

How about the truth spelled out: Your kids’ computers may be able to access porn, and have them checked. We are not allowed to install filters on them ourselves, and that really isn’t the point.

Parents should either have control or South should be responsible for at least informing the parents. One whole year has been long enough to fix this. How many vulnerable kids are they going to give open access to stuff without telling parents? Kids all know; it is time the parents do.

South High is taking away teaching free speech being taught responsibly by taking money from the school newspaper and making it a club instead, and giving the kids free reign on the Internet instead. Not very responsible, if you ask me.
