Neighbors: Searching for Linda Lu
Gloria Olson, Dilworth, remembers playing it, but can’t remember how.
She says she learned to play it when her grandpa came to visit, because the game required a partner.
She wonders if any Neighbors readers ever played it.
On another matter, Steve Tschida, production manager for WDAY AM 970, Fargo, seeks information about Linda Lu, a radio performer from years ago.
Steve received a letter from Harold Haataja, Menahga, Minn., inquiring about Linda Lu, whose real name was Dorothy (Venard) Fandrich, and who yodeled with the Co-op Shoppers singing group.
Harold knows she graduated from what now is Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1945 in physical education and history, and that she sang for the Shoppers’ six-days-a-week program on WDAY for 22 years and never missed a broadcast. She had taught herself how to yodel.
The Shoppers went off the air in 1966.
Dorothy had a second career as a health education teacher at Moorhead Junior High School.
Her career began when, while a senior at Graceville (Minn.) High School, she won a talent contest on WDAY’s “Hayloft Jamboree” show. That show’s emcee, Ken Kennedy, gave her the Linda Lu moniker.
Now, Harold and Steve and Neighbors wonder what happened to her. Can you tell us?
