Detroit Lakes top Fargo NorthFARGO – It took a half of surviving the simmering heat, but when the sun went down, the Detroit Lakes football team started to roll.
The Lakers used a dominating second half to down home team Fargo North 35-20 Friday in DL’s season opener.
“We were playing a lot of people in the first half because it was so hot, but we eventually started to wear them out in the second half,” said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher.
One of the reasons the Spartans started to run on empty in the third and fourth quarters was due to DL’s massive offensive line, which blew open holes for senior running back Jarett Nosal and senior quarterback Michael Herzog.
Nosal had three rushes of 35-plus yards and five runs of 10 or more, which keyed his 171 rushing yards on just 12 carries for a lofty 14.25 yards per rush.
“It was all due to blocking,” Nosal said. “Our line was just blasting everyone off the line of scrimmage.”
Herzog found the end zone four times on the ground, while passing for one.
The Lakers trailed 6-0 after the first quarter, but built a 28-12 lead by the 6:26 mark in the fourth quarter.
DL is coming off a 10-1 2012 season, with the majority of their team returning, including one of their biggest offensive lines in quite some time.
“Hopefully we will be much more of a physical team this year,” Motschenbacher said.
Fargo North had scores by senior running back Seth Brenneman and a pair of touchdown passes by senior quarterback Avery Thompson on plays of 12 and 25 yards out to Willy Roman and Mike Boutain.
