Weather Talk: Cool temps of early August contrast with heat wave later in month

With two days left in the month, it appears that August 2013 will go down in the record book as a month with a slightly above-average temperature. But to have lived through this past month was to have lived in two separate climates.

The first 14 days of the month were all below average. Every day was cooler than average. Ten of those mornings were in the 50s, and four were in the 40s. Every night I closed windows so the house would not be too cool in the morning.

Every day since then has been above average. There have been seven days in the 80s and seven in the 90s. I have surrendered to air conditioning.

And now at month’s end, the two trends just about cancel each other out. It has been an extraordinary month of cool and hot weather, but the average temperature for the month does not reveal this. If anyone had forecast average temperatures for the month of August, they would have been exactly right and also completely wrong.
