Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton football preview

Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton got a rude welcome to Class 3A football in 2012-13, as the Rebels lost their first three games to start the season. The Rebels finished 2-7, losing by an average of 18 points, and lost in the first round of the section playoffs.

After going 4-5 in Class 2A in 2011-12, the Rebels were finding it tough to adjust to Class 3A. It didn’t help that they were a little short on upperclassmen.

“It’s hard to compete with sophomores against seniors,” D-G-F coach Tony Soderberg said. “I think we started eight or nine of them. We start a lot of juniors too. We had a pretty small senior class. We had sophomores and juniors going against seniors on the offensive and defensive line, so up front we got pushed around a little bit.”

The Rebels had just seven seniors on the 2012-13 squad, with just five of them starting.

Outlook

The Rebels are

ready to hand out some rude awakenings themselves this season.

“All those sophomores are now juniors and those juniors are now seniors,” Soderberg said. “We have a lot of talent that has physically developed. These kids have taken their lumps, but it’s looking like they are ready to give a couple back.”

Senior Zack Nelson will lead the offense as the quarterback, with junior Brandon Wayne and senior captain Chad Johnson taking the ball in the backfield at running back. Up front, the Rebels are led by Wyatt Bolin on both lines. The Rebels are done getting pushed around.

“We want to play for a section championship,” Soderberg said. “I think that is definitely in the realm of possibility. For us, we played quite a lot of teams last year that had quite a lot of seniors and we were young. Graduation happened to everybody. You never know what they are going to be like when you’re going to go and face them, but to have that many returning kids with physical development, we’re going to shoot for a section championship.”
