ND Class 3A, East Region football preview capsules

Devils Lake

Coach: Jay Schneider (8th year)

2012 record: 4-6

RB/LB; Austin Schall, Sr., RB/DB (all-state second team); Dallas Anderson, Sr., FB/LB; Austin Erickson, Sr., TE/LB.

Coach’s comments: “Defense should be one of our strengths, as we started seven underclassmen in 2012. Our offensive line and quarterback will be areas where we’ll need immediate improvement. We lost three offensive lineman and our quarterback so we’ll need some guys to step up into those positions for us to be successful this season.”

2012 record: 3-6

Coach’s comments: “We have a lot of experience. Most of our kids have a lot of varsity playing time. We have great team speed at the skill positions, which is a good thing. Our quarterback (Aidan Hartness) is a year older and looks more comfortable. We also have two all-state offensive and defensive linemen returning.”

Coach’s comments: “A lot of the guys that played in the backfield last year are returning. We have an all-state offensive lineman back on the line and an all-state linebacker back on defense. It helps to have that experience coming back.”

Fargo South

Coach: Troy Mattern (4th year)

2012 record: 8-3 (Eastern Dakota Conference champions)

Players to watch: Zach Kellen, Sr., QB, Tyler Trefethren, Sr., DL; Joe Mehrer, Sr., OL (all-state second team); Drew Fahrman, Sr., OL (all-state first team); Dallas Raftevold, Sr., S; Kyle Trefethren, Jr., OL; James Johannesson, Jr., RB (all-state first team); Ty Brooks, Sr., CB; Chris Prisinzano, Sr., LB; Cole Staigle, Sr., TE.

Coach’s comments: “We are very happy with where are at. Like with most teams, our goal early on in the season is to create added depth we will need as we go along during the season. We return eight starters on offense. Defensively, our secondary has been our strong point. We also seem to be a lot more athletic than we were last year.”

Schedule: Aug. 30-Mandan, 5 p.m.; Sept. 6-at Bismarck Century, 7 p.m.; Sept. 14-at Devils Lake, 3 p.m.; Sept. 20-Fargo North, 5 p.m.; Sept. 27-Bismarck, 7 p.m.; Oct. 4-at Grand Forks Central, 7 p.m.; Oct. 11-at West Fargo, 7 p.m.; Oct. 19-Fargo Davies, 1 p.m.; Oct. 25-Grand Forks Red River, 7 p.m.

Grand Forks Central

Coach: Bill Lorenz (7th year)

2012 record: 1-8

Players to watch: Casey Aarvig, Sr., WR/DB; Blake Brandon, Sr., RB/OL; Joe Martin, Sr., WR/LB; Kyle Terill, Sr., OL/LB; Spencer Oen, Jr., WR/OL, Jake Mussman, Jr., QB/DB; Kaleb Binstock, Jr., QB/LB.

Coach’s comments: “We are going to be a very young team this season. We only have 10 seniors that have experience returning in 2013. We will have to rely heavily on our junior class. Our junior class does have the talent in the skill positions, but we will have to develop some depth on the offensive and defensive lines.”

Grand Forks Red River

Coach: Vyrn Muir (10th year)

2012 record: 8-2

Players to watch: Chad Bartosh, Sr., QB/DB (all-state second team), Jordan Lunski, Sr., RB/LB; Jake Olson, Sr., OL/DL; Brady Regimbal, Sr., OL/DL; Jake Roboson, Sr., TE/LB; Vince Davila-Jordahl, Jr., RB/LB; Chase Christen, Jr., WR/DB; Logan Steen, Jr., OL/DL; Ty Strauss, Jr., QB/WR; Zach Ranisate, Jr., RB/LB; Lucas Nuelle, Jr., RB/LB; Alex Sampson, Jr., OL/DL; Justin Mann, Jr., OL/DL; Marquelle Tandeski, Jr., OL/DL.

Coach’s comments: “This year will be the first time since 2009 that we return a quarterback with experience. Chad Bartosh is a great athlete and clutch performer. We will rely on him to have our offense be productive. We have to get some inexperienced players ready to play right away after experiencing heavy senior losses at all our skill positions outside of quarterback.”

Schedule: Aug. 30- at Bismarck, 5 p.m.; Sept. 6-Devils Lake, 7 p.m.; Sept. 13-at Mandan, 7 p.m.; Sept. 27-Minot, 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 4-at Fargo North, 5 p.m.; Oct. 11-Grand Forks Central, 7 p.m.; Oct. 19-West Fargo, 4 p.m.; Oct. 25-at Fargo South, 7 p.m.

West Fargo

Coach: Jay Gibson (23rd year)

2012 record: 7-4

Players to watch: Matthew Pyle, Sr., WR/DB; Jacob Blotsky, Jr., WR/DB; Scott Cameron, Sr., QB/LB; Garrett Styf, Sr., TE/LB; Jacob Hoy, Jr., QB/DB; Aaron Fraase, Sr., WR/DB; Tyler Dolan, Sr., TE/LB; Austin Dolan, Sr., WR/DB; Daniel Benson, Sr., WR/DB; Samuel Olsen, Jr., RB/LB; Austin Fraase, Sr., OL/DL; Zach Mohs, Jr., OL/DL; Evan Kuntz, Jr., Sr., OL/DL.

Coach’s comments: “We lost a lot of players from last year and we will be starting over at several positions. Scott Cameron and Jacob Hoy both rotated plays at quarterback last year. It’s nice to have experience returning at the quarterback position and both (Cameron and Hoy) have been doing well in practice. I’m pleased with that, but when you have 10 guys around that are new that is a challenge. There will be some growing pains.”

Schedule: Aug. 30-at Minot, 7 p.m.; Sept. 6-Bismarck, 7 p.m.; Sept. 13-at Fargo North, 7 p.m.; Sept. 20-Grand Forks Central, 6 p.m.; Sept. 27-at Devils Lake, 7 p.m.; Oct. 4-at Bismarck Century, 7 p.m.; Oct. 11-Fargo South, 7 p.m.; Oct. 19-at Grand Forks Red River, 4 p.m.; Oct. 25-Fargo Davies, 7 p.m.
