MAKING THE GRADE: Sarah Rice, Moorhead, was named to the spring semester dean’s list at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo.

AWARDS AND OTHER RECOGNITIONS: The Jefferson Neighborhood Association recently announced winners of Historic Preservation Awards and the Yard and Garden Awards for 2013. Honored for the appearance and condition of historic properties were: Robert Anderson and Tracy Johnson, 1411 6th Ave. S., built in 1925; Lindsey Warner, 1436 6th Ave. S., built in 1917; and Richard and Lesley Meyer, 8th Ave. S., built in 1923. Yarn and Garden Awards were given to: Jeff Novotny, 921 17th St. S.; Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 613 16th St. S.; and Donald Josund and Lauryl Larson, 713 20th St. S.

Tyann Schlenker, Fargo, was recently awarded the National AMVETS Auxiliary Member of the Year at the national convention held in Reno, Nev. Schlenker has held numerous positions including president of AMVETS Post 7 Auxiliary and state president of North Dakota’s AMVETS Auxiliary.

Brandi Kruse, a 2006 graduate of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School, was recently named best radio/television reporter in Seattle Weekly’s 2013 “Best of Seattle.” Kruse graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. She currently works for KIRO radio of Seattle.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS: Michael Backman, Fargo, has been awarded a $1,500 Syngenta Sugarbeet Scholarship. Applicants were required to answer an essay question about the biggest challenge facing sugarbeet production and shared ideas to address the problem. Winners were selected based on creativity, flow and professional appeal.

The Cass County Farm Bureau has awarded $1,000 scholarships to the following students: Jennifer Muscha, Martin Graig Ausk, Sheyenne Weber, Madison Koenig and Andrea Steinberger, Applicants must reside in Cass County and have a parent or grandparent who is a member of Cass County Farm Bureau. The University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, has awarded academic scholarships to the following students:

David Evers, son of John and Andrine Evers, Wahpeton, N.D., Presidential Scholarship and Outstanding Leadership Scholarship.Ericka Hughes, daughter of Brian and Tammie Hughes, Fargo, Outstanding High School Leadership Scholarship.

Ethan Doll, son of Peter and Katrina Doll, West Fargo, Presidential Scholarship.

George Neu, son of George and Dawne Neu, West Fargo, Presidential Scholarship.

Matthew Lorenz, son of Gary and Pamela Lorenz, Fargo, Presidential Scholarship.

HIGH HONORS: Park Christion High School student Sarah Herlihy has been selected as a semifinalist in the 2013 Broadcom MASTERS, a program of Society for Science and the Public. She is one of 300 semifinalists from a field of over 6,000 nominees. Thirty finalists will be announced Aug. 27. Finalists, along with a parent, will receive a paid trip to Washington to attend the Broadcom MASTERS finals, where more than 100,000 in awards will be given out.
