Letter: Republicans overstate case

In response to Marlene Axtman’s letter “Democrats unable to lead” (Aug. 18):

I find it necessary to challenge this notion that the Republican Party is the sole source of everything going well in North Dakota. Axtman says that “we have a thriving economy here because it was Republican policies that brought it about.” Apparently Republicans, with their policies, are able to inject massive amounts of oil into the ground and also control the weather and farm commodity prices. Amazing!

Axtman claims that our natural resource (oil) is not the reason for our economic success because “many other states have abundant natural resources, but they are not seeing growth like we are.” The problem is that every time I hear that talking point repeated, not one single example is ever cited. Can someone name one state that has a massive oil deposit the size of the Bakken and is not being developed because of that state’s policies?

The Republican Party is way too full of itself to admit that Mother Nature deserves most of the credit for our economy.
