GIRLS

Moorhead

Coach: Scott Matheson (17th season)

Last season: 6-7 overall

Who’s gone: Jessica Glatt, Jordan Slaughter, Katie Trygg, Briaunna Cornelieson.

Key returners: Brianna Storms (captain), Jr., singles; Anna Steinwand, So., singles; Mallory Smith, Jr., singles; Madeline Mueller (captain), Sr., doubles; Ally Grimly (captain), Sr., doubles.

Coach’s comments: “We will be young and inexperienced this year, but should have a very competitive singles lineup. Doubles will be an area of emphasis with teams needing to mature quickly. Seniors and tri-captains Madeline Mueller and Ally Grimly will be called upon to lead in this area and we’re hoping some underclass athletes emerge during team tryouts.”

BOYS

Fargo Davies

Coach: Paul Kolesar (fourth year)

Last year’s record: 7-7 overall, 5-3 Eastern Dakota Conference

Who’s gone: Dane Poppe, Sean Thompson, Ben Ferguson.

Key returners: Marcus Osman, Sr., Siddharth Gupta, Sr.; Evan Kottsick, Jr.

Coach’s comments: “The team is off and running and looking good,” Kolesar said. “I feel that we have a solid group of players at the top of our lineup and the rest of the lineup is filled with consistent players.”

“We’ll also have a lot of senior leadership on the team, which will be nice,” Kolesar added. “Our goal this fall will be to qualify for state as a team and get more individual qualifiers.”

Fargo South

Coach: Vic Youngs (26th year)

Last year’s record: 3-10 overall, 2-6 EDC

Who’s gone: Charlie Beske, Stephen Howlett.

Key returners: David Youngs, Soph.; Davis Lawley, eighth grade; Quinn Del Val, Sr.; Carter Steffes, Soph., Brett Schulz, Soph.; Jeffery Olander, Sr., Alex Jellison, Sr.

Coach’s comments: “We were proud to be in the conversation of teams that were contending in the conference last season,” Youngs said. “We have a lot of players coming back and I feel that we’ll be a part of the conversation on who qualifies for the state tournament this year. We were able to push and challenge teams last season and I think we will be an improved team this fall.”

Fargo North

Coach: Greg Unruh (18th year)

Last year’s record: 12-5 overall, 7-1 EDC (6th place at state team dual tournament)

Who’s gone: Andy Ficek, Austen Strom, Ethan Woods, Christian Colman, Nate Jacobson, Aaron Scherling.

Key returners: Ben Mostad, Jr., Ben Swanson, Soph., Johann Landman, Sr.

Coach’s comments: “We lose several players so it is going to take a little while to rebound,” Unruh said. “Our goal will be to get better every week. We are an athletic team and if we improve some of the guys’ tennis skills we should be able to play our way into one of the state-qualifying matches at the EDC tournament.”

Fargo Shanley

Coach: Tony Walz (fourth year)

Last year’s record: 7-7 overall, 4-4 EDC (Qualified for state team dual tournament)

Who’s gone: Michael Storandt, Jay Hansen, Dylan Alderman.

Key returners: Patrick Strom, Sr.; Ander Sawchuck, Sr.; Damian O’Donnell, Fr.; Sebastian O’Donnell, Jr.; Scott Schwandt, Sr.; Alex Fairfield, Sr.; Brandon Schott, Sr.

Coach’s comments: “We finished third in the EDC tournament last season after coming in seeded fifth,” Walz said. “We have seven returning varsity players with a lot of experience so we expect to field a very strong team this year.”

West Fargo

Coach: Chad Anderson (14th year)

Last year’s record: 8-9 overall, 5-3 EDC

Who’s gone: None.

Key returners: Brady Ballweber, Jr.; Keyan Farahmand, Jr.; North Knewtson, Fr.; Nick Sikorski, Sr.; Michael Holland, Sr.; Brendan Walker, Jr.; Drew Kooyer, Jr.

Coach’s comments: “We have a lot of experience returning this year,” Anderson said. “The boys have worked hard over the summer and have put in a lot of hours at tournaments to improve from last year. As a team, we should be solid at all six flights of singles and three flights of doubles.”

“Depth should be to our advantage this year,” Anderson added. “I’m looking forward to our fall season.”
