Dayton, top lawmakers to talk special session

ST. PAUL — Gov. Mark Dayton is meeting with the Legislature's four top leaders as they try to agree on whether to hold a special session.

Dayton and the lawmakers plan to meet Friday afternoon in the governor's office. They're eyeing a one-day special session early next month to pass state disaster aid for areas hit hard by June storms, and possibly to repeal a recently enacted sales tax on farm equipment.

Dayton says he will only call the session if the four leaders agree to limit it to those two items only. While only the governor can call a special session, only lawmakers can adjourn it.

Republicans and even some Democratic lawmakers have suggested other items for the agenda, but Dayton says everything else can wait until next year's regular session.
