Rockland edges RedHawks at Newman

FARGO – Seven singles proved to be enough for the Rockland Boulders on Monday night.

Despite not having an extra-base hit, Rockland clawed its way to a 4-2 victory against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in independent baseball before 3,680 fans at Newman Outdoor Field.

“We didn’t hit enough,” RedHawks manager Doug Simunic said. “We didn’t do enough to generate anything.”

The RedHawks (51-30) had their three-game winning streak snapped. Rockland plays in the Can-Am League, while F-M is in the American Association. There is interleague play between the leagues because both have an odd number of teams.

The Can-Am League has five teams. The American Association has 13 teams.

“The good thing is, it is baseball, and we can come back and play tomorrow,” said RedHawks second baseman C.J. Retherford, who had a double and scored a run. “You can put it behind you.”

Rockland shortstop Matt Nandin knocked in the game-winning runs in the ninth inning. The No. 9 hitter came to the plate with the bases loaded, the game tied and two outs. Nandin hit a bouncing grounder that snuck through the left side of the infield, scoring Stephen Cardullo and Jaren Matthews. That gave the Boulders a 4-2 lead.

The RedHawks had all the extra-bases hits in the game with three doubles. Rockland starter Bo Budkevics pitched six solid innings, limiting F-M to one run on three hits. The right-hander retired the final eight batters he faced.

“He was throwing a lot of strikes,” Simunic said of Budkevics. “He would get two strikes on you pretty quick. … But we didn’t offer at him a whole lot. We took and took and took until we got ourselves in a hole. Then we would take a bad swing.”

The RedHawks never led, but tied the game in the seventh inning after Todd Jennings cracked an RBI double to left-center field. That hit scored Tim Alberts from second base and made the score 2-2.

The RedHawks threatened in the ninth inning, putting runners on first and third base with two outs. However, lead-off hitter Zach Penprase struck out looking to end the game.

“We’ve got to bounce back and show them what we are made of,” Retherford said.

The RedHawks played without center fielder Nic Jackson. Simunic said he gave Jackson, who bats third in the lineup, the night off to heal up some “bumps and bruises.”

F-M got a solid start from right-hander Danny Gutierrez, who allowed two runs on five hits in six-plus innings. Gutierrez was lifted from the game after allowing a single to lead off the seventh inning. Monday was Gutierrez’s first action in 10 days. He was activated from the disabled list prior to the game.

“It was good,” Simunic said of Gutierrez’s outing. “There were times that he showed flashes of it. He kept us in the game.”

NOTES: Right-hander Taylor Stanton (7-3, 2.32 ERA) is set to start today for the RedHawks. Rockland is expected to counter with right-hander Charlie Law (2-1, 2.94 ERA). … The RedHawks have a 25-15 home record this season. They are 26-15 on the road.
