Creighton Prep tops Rapid City in a Central Plains Regional elimination gameFARGO – After taking a loss to Carroll County (Iowa) on Friday, Creighton Prep (Omaha, Neb.) faced elimination on Saturday at Jack Williams Stadium.
Thanks to the pitching of Adam Wilson and several timely runs, Creighton Prep is alive and well at the American Legion Central Plains Regional baseball tournament.
Wilson scattered six hits in a complete-game 4-1 victory over Rapid City (S.D.).
The 6-foot-1 left-hander walked four, struck out three and used 117 pitches to go the distance.
“Once he settles in with all his pitches, he gets tough,” Creighton Prep head coach Pat Mooney said. “He gets batters to swing at pitches out of the zone. He is just a battler.”
Creighton Prep (50-11) advances to play in a loser-out game at 3 p.m. today.
Alex Allbery was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Creighton Prep. Allbery led off Creighton Prep’s two-run fourth inning with a single and later scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Zach Garrett.
Creighton Prep capitalized on its chances, which were hard to come by off of Rapid City starting pitcher Ryan Lees.
Lees faced the minimum through the first three innings, but walked four in 7Xc innings. Two of those walks brought in runs for Creighton Prep in the eighth inning.
“We got some runners on base and made (Ryan Lees) throw a lot of pitches,” Mooney said. “I think he just ran out of gas. He was tough on us, and he had a good fastball. Fortunately for us, he lost the strike zone for a little bit there.”
Rapid City scored a run on a throwing error in the sixth inning. Connor Merriam finished 2-for-2 with a run scored for Rapid City (57-15-1).
“A few groundouts to score some runs helped,” Mooney said. “We have been struggling just to score runs, and we knew it was going to be a good game. Rapid City is well coached and their kids make plays on the balls hit at them. We knew we had to do everything possible just to score anything.”
