Former Spirit Lake Nation official guilty of theft

GRAND FORKS - The former director of tribal social services for the Spirit Lake Nation has been convicted of theft by a North Dakota jury.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that the jury acquitted Mark Little Owl on two other misdemeanor counts of simple assault and deprivation of a minor. All the charges were from a domestic disturbance in August 2012 at the Grand Forks apartment of Little Owl's former wife.

Little Owl had been accused of striking his former wife and physically and verbally abusing her in the presence of their two children, who were 3 and 6 years old at the time.

Little Owl also was accused of taking his former wife's cellphone.

District Judge Sonja Clapp has set Little Owl's sentencing for Aug. 28 on the misdemeanor theft conviction.
