Burnsville claims victory on walk-off wild pitchFARGO – Burnsville started its week with a 15-2 loss to Eden Prairie in the Minnesota Division I American Legion state championship game.
Five days later, Burnsville was celebrating a walk-off, 5-4 victory over Eden Prairie following a winner’s-bracket game at the American Legion Central Plains Regional baseball tournament on Friday at Jack Williams Stadium.
Burnsville (32-10) scored three run in the eighth inning to tie the game at 4-4 and sealed the win scoring the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
“It wasn’t pretty, but we got it done,” Burnsville head coach Greg Nesbitt said. “We got some runners on base in the late innings and found some holes.”
Burnsville outfielder Zach Smith led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and got to third by tagging on fly ball.
Smith crossed the plate when a delivery by Eden Prairie reliever Will Phillips got away and sailed to the backstop.
Burnsville advances to play Carroll County (Iowa) in a winner’s-bracket game at 7 p.m. Eden Prairie (33-13) plays Omaha Westside, Neb., in a loser-out game at 4 p.m. today.
Burnsville scored two of its three runs in the eighth inning off wild pitches thrown by Eden Prairie starter Luke Lind.
“Every run you can get is important,” Nesbitt said. “We were able to put some runners on and then we started to get more aggressive. Any time you get aggressive good things usually happen.”
Camden Traetow was
2-for-4 with a solo home run in the third inning for Burnsville.
Cody Wetmore was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for Eden Prairie.
