Letter: King measure not acceptable

We should all be aware of the dangerous amendment to the House farm bill introduced by Rep. Steve King of Iowa. If included in the final version of the farm bill, the “King Amendment” will invalidate hundreds of state agricultural laws that seek to protect workers, animals and the planet. Laws set in place to crack down on factory farms, puppy mills and horse slaughter plants would be null and void.

It’s beyond my understanding why any representative with his constituents’ welfare at heart would introduce such a harmful and regressive provision to the farm bill.

I urge Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., as a likely member of the bill’s conference committee, to lobby vigorously to ensure that King’s radical assault on important state laws is not included in the final version of the farm bill.
