Shoplifting suspect tells police she’s 37 weeks pregnant

FARGO – A Moorhead woman who was arrested last week after prosecutors say she was caught shoplifting more than $600 worth of clothes from a Fargo store allegedly told an arresting officer she was 37 weeks pregnant at the time and was supposed to be on bed rest.

Crystal Turrubiates, 22, of Moorhead, was charged July 30 in Cass County District Court with one count of Class C felony theft.

According to documents filed in the case, officers were called to Kohl’s at 4444 13th Ave. S. in Fargo on a report of a shoplifter.

Dispatch told officers headed to the call that a loss prevention worker with Kohl’s had also reported being assaulted by a shopper, Elisabeth Christoferson, Turrubiates’ sister, who was trying to get into the loss prevention room.

When the officer placed Turrubiates under arrest, the complaint states, she told him she “shouldn’t even be here,” and that she was on bed rest at 37 weeks pregnant. The average pregnancy is considered full term at 38 weeks.

The complaint also states that Turrubiates told the officer her other two children are beginning school this year and she did not have the money for clothes for them.

Turrubiates’ bail was set at $1,000. Her next court appearance was set for Aug. 28.
