Weather Talk: Latest hurricane forecast lowers number of stormsThe latest forecast calls for 14 more storms, with eight of them reaching hurricane status, down from 15 and eight in the forecast released earlier this summer. The primary reason for the change is cooler-than-expected water temperatures over the western Gulf and eastern Atlantic caused by heavy rainfall in these areas this summer.
It should be noted that these forecasts are for the entire Atlantic Basin. Usually only a fraction of tropical storms actually make landfall.
