It was while they were vacationing in 1992 that Mel Nelson, his wife and their kids first drove across the 5-mile-long Mackinac Bridge linking the state of Michigan’s two peninsulas. That bridge, the third longest suspension bridge in the world, made a powerful impression on Mel.
