National abortion rights tour rallies at 3 today in downtown Fargo

FARGO — A national tour of abortions rights activists will gather here this afternoon to rally for abortion rights, which they claim are still in a “state of emergency” in North Dakota.

The Abortion Rights Freedom Ride will rally at 3 p.m. today at the downtown U.S. Bank Plaza.

The rally comes days after a Cass County judge issued an injunction blocking a state law requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. Had the new law gone into effect, it would have shut down the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo — the state’s sole abortion provider.

Though Judge Wickham Corwin issued the injunction Wednesday, the group behind today’s rally says “abortion rights continue to be under assault in North Dakota,” according to a news release.

Earlier this week, the group gathered to support the Red River Women's Clinic on the way to the injunction hearing. They greeted Tammi Kromenaker, the clinic's director, with an "Abortion Providers are Heroes" banner.

Activists with the Abortion Rights Freedom Ride are in Fargo as part of a 15-state tour to promote access to abortion. They’ll travel next to Wichita, Kan. and Jackson, Miss.
