ND man accused of mistreating horses pleads guiltyBISMARCK — A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges for the deaths of more than 100 horses.
William Kiefer, who has homes in Fargo and New Salem, is charged with nine counts of overworking, mistreating or abandoning animals. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail.
South Central District Judge Tom Schneider ordered a pre-sentence investigation.
Authorities seized more than 150 animals from Kiefer's properties in the two counties in January after finding nearly 100 dead animals. The seized animals were then adopted out.
Investigators say Kiefer failed to provide necessary food, water and shelter to his animals.
