Bismarck upends Grand Forks at ND Class A American Legion state baseball tourneyWEST FARGO – Grand Forks opened the North Dakota Class A American Legion baseball tournament with a walk-off victory Wednesday, but on Thursday its late-inning rally came up short.
The Royals fell to Bismarck 10-8 at Veterans Memorial Field.
Bismarck (32-16) advances to play Fargo Post 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday. Grand Forks falls to the play-back round and plays the winner of the Dickinson-Minot loser-out game at 5 p.m. today.
The Royals trailed 9-4 entering the bottom of the eighth, but scored four runs to pull within one run of Bismarck. However, the Governors hung on for the win.
Grand Forks loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Bismarck reliever Andrew Dill struck out three in a row to seal the victory.
Grand Forks starting pitcher Brady Regimbal faced the minimum through the first three innings, but Bismarck got to the 6-foot-3 lefty in the fourth inning.
Trent Bohan led off the fourth with a double and Kole Bauer reached on an error by Regimbal. Bohan and Bauer later scored on a single off the bat of Jake Brucker. Designated hitter Jared Spooner broke the inning open with a two-run single that scored Brucker and Hunter Walsh.
Grand Forks answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. No. 9 batter Kaden Monette delivered first with an RBI single and two batters later Cole Kirchoffner connected for a two-run single.
The Governors took the lead the back in the top of the fifth when Bauer reached base on a double and scored on a single by Walsh.
Bismarck added two more runs in the sixth inning. The Governors plated both runs with two outs.
