Weather Talk: F-M weather can change dramatically with wind

Barring an extremely heavy rainstorm between now and Wednesday night, July will go down as the first drier-than-average month since last January.

February through June was a very wet period. May and June were especially wet months, ranking fourth and seventh respectively, since records began in 1881. It was the wettest May-June period on record.

The previous year, 2012, had been a very dry year after three extremely wet years in a row.

The twists and turns of our mid-continent climate continued over the weekend as very cool weather suddenly appeared after an extremely warm summer.

Our location in the middle of a large land mass with a major north-south-oriented mountain range to the west blocking the moderating effects of the oceans means our weather can change dramatically anytime the wind changes direction. This happens a lot here, but we never seem to get used to the changes.
