Neighbors: WDAY Band Festival major event

One of the major summertime events in Fargo-Moorhead years ago was the annual WDAY Band Festival, which brought in high school bands from all over the area for a parade and concerts.

WDAY’s Ken Kennedy headed it up for many years. And therein lies a story.

It comes from Gary Westerholm, of Fargo, who at that time worked for Fargo Rubber Stamp, which produces many items, including promotional buttons.

One of its big orders each year came from WDAY for Band Festival buttons.

“If I remember correctly,” Gary writes, “the numbers were upwards of 15,000 and in full color. In the ’60s and ’70s, this was a good size order, and we appreciated the business.”

One time after that year’s festival was over, Ken called Cy Fossum, who then was owner of Fargo Rubber Stamp, and asked him if he wanted to be paid for the buttons.

Well, sure, Cy said. But why was Ken calling?

Well, Ken said, WDAY had never received a bill.

“That was a shock to Cy,” Gary says, “because the buttons were ordered and delivered the month before the parade.”

Cy checked with his bookkeeping department and found that the order had been filed without being billed.

So, yes, the billing finally went out, and, yes, the bill was paid.

In 1975, Cy sold the business to some employees, including Gary, who became its president. Now the company has been sold again and relocated in Moorhead.

But Gary can’t forget the Band Festival button incident, and how Cy expressed his thanks to Ken “for being a gentleman and an honest businessman.”

Proving once again (you might want to write this down) that honesty is the best policy.
