Sister of slain Sandy Hook teacher to speak Monday at pro-gun control rally in FargoFARGO – The sister of a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting will speak at a pro-gun control rally here on Monday.
The “No More Names” rally starts at 10 a.m. in Island Park. It’s part of a 25-city, 100-day tour hosted by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group started by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino in 2006.
Slated to speak at the event is Carlee Soto, whose sister Victoria Soto was a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., and was slain in the school shooting there last December.
Also speaking Monday will be Bill Badger, who survived the 2011 Tucson, Ariz., shooting at a political rally.
Other speakers include former Fargo Mayor Jon Lindgren; Susan Beehler, the North Dakota chapter leader of Moms Demand Action; The Rev. Peter Schmidt of Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo; and other local advocates of gun control, according to a press release from the mayoral group.
Speakers will urge U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp to reconsider her position on background checks, according to the release.
Bloomberg will not attend, and neither will Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker, who has called himself an “inactive member” of the mayoral group.
