Letter: Hoeven works on immigrationThank you to Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., for working to find a solution to securing our borders and dealing with the immigration issue in this country.
Hoeven’s plan requires that 700 miles of border fence are in place, 20,000 new border agents are put on the U.S.-Mexico border, and billions of dollars of new effective technology are deployed before anyone can even begin the path to citizenship.
Also, under this bill, Homeland Security will be required to start deporting over 90 percent of visitors to our country who overstay their visas. This is huge because over 40 percent of illegal immigrants are here because they overstayed their visas.
There is no amnesty or guarantee of citizenship in this plan. Illegal immigrants already in this country will need to apply for a provisional immigrant status, undergo a background check, pay a $2,000 fine and pay all back taxes owed from the time they were in this country illegally. Then, after 10 years, provided that all requirements have been met by Homeland Security and the illegal immigrant, the illegal immigrant can only then apply for a green card or legal immigrant status.
It is about time we deal with this problem. If these illegal immigrants are here and are benefiting from all that our country has to offer, they need to start paying their fair share of taxes, and that is what will happen under the Hoeven plan. The Congressional Budget Office estimates future deficits will be reduced by $1 trillion over the next 20 years.
